John H. Bass was born in Adams County, Miss., attended medical school in Louisville, Ky., and practiced medicine in Madison Parish, La. At the onset of the Clivil War, Bass volunteered for the Confederate Army as a captain. He served the entire war as assistant surgeon, mainly in Georgia and Tennessee.
